The Okanagan valley is the region surrounding the Okanagan lake and river, in South BC. It is mostly well-known for its dry sunny climate, making it an ideal spot to grow vines and all sorts of fruits. The soil is very similar to central Washington in the US (Spokane and where we wine tasted in particular).
If like us, you plan to drive through or spend some time in the valley, here are our 3 favourite things to do:
1. Fruit picking in a small local farm (Kelowna)

Picking your own fruit is a national sport in BC in summer. Not only is it super fun to do, but you’re also guaranteed to have the most fresh/beautiful/clean fruits available. Fruit picking is a great activity to do with your kids too! We picked ours in Kelowna in a cute little orchard that offered cherries, peaches, apricots and flower picking. We picked up a few cherries as well as peaches and we also bought some local honey from the farm.
2. Freshening up by taking a dip in the Okanagan lake (Peachland)
If you stop in Peachland, there are good chances you’ll find a cute beach on the shores of the Okanagan Lake. And you should definitely stop there! It’s a great remedy to the summer heat and the water is crystal clear with a nice sandy bottom.
So get your towel, a good book and lots of water (because it gets quite hot and there’s not a lot of shade) and spend the afternoon on the yellow sand of Antlers beach and in the warm waters of the lake.

3. Picnic with local produces (Penticton)
Once you’ve picked up your fruits in Kelowna, we suggest you head to Upper Bench Winery and Creamery and grab some of their local wine and cheese. After that, go find a secluded spot in the heights of Penticton and treat yourself to a picnic and a night of camping under the stars and with a great sunset view over the fabulous lake!

It seems like there’s obviously tons of others things to do in the valley, but anything that revolves around laying in the sun and eating fresh food is usually going to take over for us !

Looks like a beautiful place to visit. It’s great that several fruits are offered for your picking! I picked lots of blueberries last summer. Somehow it feels more special when you pick them yourselves. I’m glad to be able to pick for a period of time and walk away. I would not enjoy working in the fields like so many Latino people in this country…that work is back breaking!
